Village of Mamaroneck’s Committee for the Environment Hosts Successful Clean & Green Day

The Village of Mamaroneck’s Committee for the Environment (CftE) hosted a successful Clean and Green Day event this past Saturday, May 1st. Attended by approximately 200 volunteers, the morning’s festivities began at Harbor Island Park where attendees were greeted and thanked by CftE Chair Ellen Silver as well as Westchester County Executive George Latimer.

“I want to thank my fellow members of the Village’s Committee for the Environment as well as the Village employees for their help in making Clean & Green Day possible,” said CftE Chair Ellen Silver. “Most importantly, I want to thank all the Clean & Green Day volunteers for offering their time and service in picking-up litter and beautifying our Village.”

Not only was Clean and Green Day an opportunity for residents to come together and pick-up litter and garbage around the Village, but it was also a chance to celebrate the environment. Volunteers received seed packets and flowers pots and were invited to enter a free raffle for a chance to win a variety of earth-themed prizes. Following the morning’s opening remarks and free giveaways, volunteer teams set out to 13 different clean-up sites where they picked-up litter along roads and sidewalks as well as in the Village’s neighborhood parks.

When the event ended at noon, volunteers had collected a total of 1.5 tons of solid waste, 628 pounds of “green” organic yard waste and 353 pounds of recyclable items.

“It was such a wonderful event", said Village of Mamaroneck resident Lindsay Reitzes. “It filled my heart to see our community come together (safely) and for such a worthwhile cause!” Ms. Reitzes led and coordinated a group of volunteers to pick up litter along Taylor’s Lane.

Throughout the morning, Clean and Green Day attendees could also receive up-to-32-gallons per household of free compost soil, courtesy of the Village’s Department of Public Works. Processed out of the food scraps collected in the Village’s Food Scrap Recycling Program, the dark, rich compost soil (ideal for yards and gardens) was “given back” as a way to thank residents for recycling their banana peels, apple cores and other compostable foods. Food Scrap Recycling Bins were also on display and for sale at Saturday’s event to encourage more residents to participate in the program. To learn more, click here.

Residents who were unable to attend Clean and Green Day and pick-up the free compost soil can now bring up-to-two 32-gallon receptacles to the Village's Recycling Center at 313 Fayette Avenue for FREE compost soil (until supplies last). The Recycling Center is open between the hours of 7:00am and 3:15pm, Mondays through Fridays. Limit of two 32-gallon receptacles per household. Proof of Village of Mamaroneck Residency may be required.

With a successful Clean and Green Day event behind them, the Village’s Committee for the Environment is already looking ahead to engage residents in more environmental initiatives. Next up: an education campaign to inform residents about the Village’s Leaf Blower Ban that begins on May 15th and ends on September 30th.
