Village of Mamaroneck Police Departments Explorer Post 300
The Mamaroneck Police Department Explorer Post #137 was established, under the direction of Chief Edward Flynn, in May 2009. Sgt ReganKelly, PO Sandra DiRuzza and PO Ozzie Ramos organized this program inconjunction with the Boy Scouts of America. The Program is geared toward youngmen and woman, ages 14-20, which has an interest in Law Enforcement.
Explorers are exposed to all aspects of Law Enforcement andgain a working knowledge of police functions and a feeling of a socialawareness and responsibility.
Explorers are trained in various techniques used by lawenforcement professionals. Some of the areas Explorers are trained in are FirstAid, CPR, AED Radio Communications, building searches, report writing, crimescene investigation, traffic stops, self defense, accident investigation andmuch more. When an Explorer completes the required training, they are eligiblefor the Departments Ride-Along-Program where the Explorer rides along on patrolwith Mamaroneck Police Officers.
As an Explorer, young adults have the opportunity to assistthe Mamaroneck Police Department. Explorers are periodically assigned todetails within the community such as traffic control at Parades, fairs andother events. They assist Police Officers with community-based programs such ascar seat installations, bicycle rodeos, and safety fairs.
In addition to hands-on training, Explorers are exposed todifferent units within the Mamaroneck Police Department by watchingdemonstrations. These units include Patrol Operations, Marine Operations, K-9,Juvenile Aid, DARE, Detective Division and Community Policing.
Guest speakers from the FBI, DEA, Secret Service, DistrictAttorney’s Office, and other agencies come to teach the Explorers about allareas of Law Enforcement outside the Mamaroneck Police Department, as well.
Field trips to the New York City Police Academy, WestchesterCounty Forensics Lab, Westchester County Jail, the West Point Military Academy(Military Police Unit) and local and county courts are also used to exposeExplorers to different aspects of Law Enforcement outside of the MamaroneckPolice Department.
Chain of command within the Explorer Post is very important.It is a series of administrative ranks or positions in which each has directauthority over the one immediately below. Post #137 ranks consist of a Captain,who is in overall command of the operations of the post; a Lieutenant, that isan assistant to the Captain; and three Sergeants that oversee their squads andhave other duties assigned by the Captain. The Post Captain is also the liaisonbetween the Explorer Post and the Police Department Advisors.
The qualifications to become an Explorer are as fallows:
Must be at least 14 years and under 21 years of age.
Must be in good health.
Must maintain a “C” average in all school work.
Must have a clean criminal record.
Must be able to provide a positive recommendation from a teacher or community leader.
Post Meetings are conducted the first three Mondays from6:30pm-8: 30pm at the Mamaroneck Police Headquarters. Field trips replace theweekly meeting.
