Chronology of Volunteer's Most Memorable Historical Moments 1891-1991

Fire Department History
  • September 15, 1891 - Volunteers officially organized. $150.00 is raised at this organizational meeting to purchase and Engine from Irvington, New York.
  • September 25, 1891 - Plans to Purchase the necessary hoses were discussed. First company officers are elected.
  • 1896 – 1897 - Bonnie Brook Fire Company is absorbed by the Volunteers.
  • 1903 – 1905 - Volunteers change their name from Volunteers Hose Co. #3 to Volunteer Engine & Hose Co. #3.
  • May 1911 - The Volunteers become the first Motorized fire company in Mamaroneck.
  • 1912 - The Village appropriates the necessary money to erect a permanent fire house for the Volunteers.
  • 1913 - A new fire house for the Volunteers should be included in the Village's forward and upward movement for the benefit of all its people. William Martin, Maurice Thomas, Jeremiah Manning, William Elrenfeld, Michael J. O'niell, Committee.
  • March 15, 1915 - The Volunteers fire house is opened. Built over a two and one half year period at a total cost of $8,500.
  • August 17-22, 1925 - Charles Caputo (2nd Assistant Chief) and the Volunteers participate in the 53rd Annual Convention of the Firemens Association of the State of New York held in Mamaroneck.
  • The Early 1930's - Volunteers participate in Tournament Racing. The Volunteers were the State Champs for three times in this period. Dominick Cuce became the first company fatality in a traffic accident near today's Water Works.
  • 1931 - Volunteers take possession of a 1,000 gallon a minute LaFrance triple combination pumper at a cost of $14, 850.00.
  • June 20, 1943 - Volunteers helped battle Mamaroneck's worst fire in this century. The Hoyt Street Industrial Fire burned for three days and took three million gallons of water to bring under control.
  • 1947 - Volunteer's Chief Michael Orsino began the the began the Carnival for the Mamaroneck Fire Department. He is Considered to be the Father of both our Annual Carnival as well as our Parade.
  • 1956 - Volunteer fire fighter Anthony "Fat" Poccia loses his life at the Westchester Day School Fire.
  • June 14, 1967 - The Volunteer "Tigers" help battle the Cleaning Store blaze on Mamaroneck Avenue.
  • 1967 - Approval is given to raise and solicit funds through the Fire Department to purchase a new ambulance. John Quadrini heads up this effort.
  • 1973 – 1978 - The Volunteers Fire House is used as the temporary headquarters for the Volunteer Rescue Squad.
  • February 10, 1983 - The "Tigers" assist in battling Mamaroneck's worst structural fire of this century at 127 Mamaroneck Avenue.
  • September 1991 - The Volunteers celebrate 100 years of dedicated service and pledge themselves to the same commitment Mamaroneck has come to expect of them for their next century of service.
