Halstead Manor Engine & Hose Co. No. 4

Fire Department History

As the early 1900's rolled in, so did a New York realty developer named Halley. He constructed homes in great numbers on the former Halstead Estate, that once spread from Barry Avenue to the Harrison line. A group of the new residents realizing the need for more fire protection gathered at the hotel of Julius Walz (now Food City) on April 12, 1910 and formed the Halstead Manor Hose Co. #4. They purchased a lot on 4th Street and with the shell of a former real estate shack of Halley's that they moved to their new lot, and a borrowed hand pulled hose jumper of Mamaro Engine & Hose Co. 1, they became a very efficient initial attack unit. Hailed by the Mamaroneck Fire Department, they became an organized Company of the department in 1911. In May of 1914 the members purchased a Pierce-Arrow chassis and built their own engine from scratch, this made an Engine & Hose Company.

In 1924 the Village built the present fire house for the sum of $30,000. To date Halstead Manor has had a total of 6 fire engines with a new Seagrave Pumper delivered in 2001.
