Smoke Detectors.. a sound you can't live without!

Fire Prevention & Safety

Protect yourself and your family. Most fatal home fires occur at night when people are asleep. The sooner a sleeping person wakes up and begins to escape, the greater his or her chances are of surviving the fire. Smoke alarms are the most effective low-cost early-warning device available to help ensure the safety of you and your family. A smoke alarm will detect smoke and sound the alarm giving you precious time to escape.

A Quick Checklist

  • Make sure everyone knows the sound of the alarm and what to do if fire occurs.
  • Develop and regularly practice your home fire escape plan.
  • Know two ways out of every room and have a pre-arranged meeting place outside. Once outside, stay out!
  • Never go back inside for any reason and call the Fire Department from a neighbor's home.

One smoke detector is not enough! Smoke alarms are mandatory under the New York State Property Maintenance Code (see: Section 704.2).

The law says...

The NYS Property Maintenance Code requires a working smoke detector to be installed between each sleeping area and the remainder of the dwelling unit, and where the sleeping areas are served by hallways, the smoke detectors shall be installed in the hallways.

Always remember that a smoke detector should be installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions that accompanied the device. A properly maintained and tested smoke alarm is the best insurance your family can have!

REMEMBER! Only a working smoke alarm can save you and your family!
