Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update for June 2, 2020

MAMARONECK, New York, June 2, 2020 — We offer the following announcements for today, Tuesday, June 2.

Village of Mamaroneck’s Current COVID-19 Situation

Mamaroneck Mayor Tom MurphyDear Friends,

I am writing to give an update on the Village’s  COVID-19  status and mitigation efforts. Since the crisis started in the beginning of March the Village has had 400 confirmed cases. (Very likely there are many others who have been infected with a mild case or who were asymptomatic but never tested.) Recently the rate of infection has slowed dramatically. That is the good news.

Now for the more problematic observations. When the data on who was infected was first shared with the Village the cases seemed to be spread evenly throughout the whole community. That is no longer the case. The new cases are heavily focused on folks who live in apartments in the most economically stressed areas of our community. This phenomenon that has also been mirrored nationally.

These are our neighbors who are living in cramped quarters and have to go out to work every day. They work delivering groceries and take-out food. They are staffing our supermarkets, cutting our grass etc. They can’t work from home. They don’t have the resources to take time off. Like many folks today they live paycheck to paycheck. But make no mistake their exertions have enabled so many of us to safely shelter in place.

I believe that we can take positive actions as a community to try and help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Mamaroneck and thereby help our neighbors  Recently the Village has worked with the folks who are doing the food give aways to get hand sanitizer and face masks to those who need it most. We gave away 750 face masks last week. This week we supplied the hand sanitizer for over 1000 bottles that will be given to those most in need. I have been begging, borrowing and cajoling all the hand sanitizer I can get from New York State, Westchester and our friends in the Towns of Mamaroneck and Rye. We will put it to good purpose!

I believe that we have an obligation as a community to help those who need a hand in this emergency. It is the right thing to do and it is good public health policy.

When this is all over (it will eventually end) we are going to owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of those who did their everyday jobs when doing those jobs put them at great risk. We can repay them by creating a more equitable society where all honest work has its proper value.  We will also be indebted to the incredible women and men at the food give aways who have developed an efficient food supply chain to help folks through this crisis.

Until we can all meet again, stay safe. Remember, keep washing your hands. Reach out to loved ones for support and encouragement. Stay socially distant. We have NOT conquered COVID-19 yet but together we will!

Courage,

Tom Murphy
Mayor, Village of Mamaroneck

Village's 2020 Census Response Rate Is Within 5% Points
of Breaking 2010's Response Rate!

On Sunday our Village's 2020 Census Response Rate hit 65.4%! That puts the Village of Mamaroneck within 5% points of breaking our old 2010 Census Response Rate of 70.4%! We updated our Census Thermometer at the entrance to Harbor Island Park but we still need your help to get the word out about Census 2020! You can inspire others. Tell your neighbors that you completed the census, and that they should respond now, too! Visit 2020census.gov/en/how-to-help.html to find ways to help spread the word!

The Village hopes to hit (or even better exceed) 70.4% between now and August 11th. That's when Census takers start visiting households who have not responded. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s safer for the Census takers if they have fewer doors to knock on. So please help us help them by completing the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail. To complete the Census Questionnaire online, please visit My2020Census.gov.
