Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update for May 13, 2020

MAMARONECK, New York, May 12, 2020 — We offer the following announcements for today, Wednesday, May 13:

Why Wear a Mask?

Proper Face Covering Graphic

Why wear a mask? Out of respect. When you wear a mask you are saying, I respect my neighbors. When you wear a mask you are saying, I respect nurses and doctors. When you wear a mask you are saying, I respect other people. We all need to show respect to one another in difficult times. Wearing a face covering is a small inconvenience to protect others. We have gotten through this crisis by standing together and doing the right thing. The right thing — the respectful thing — is to wear a mask.

New York State DOHInformation as it Relates to Our Community from New York State

New York State is notifying 49 other states across the country of emerging cases of COVID-related illness in children. The State is currently investigating more than 80 reported cases in New York where children -- predominantly school-aged -- are experiencing symptoms similar to an atypical Kawasaki disease or a toxic shock-like syndrome possibly due to COVID-19. The illness has taken the lives of three young New Yorkers and an additional two deaths are currently under investigation.

Please seek immediate care if a child has:

  • Prolonged fever (more than five days)
  • Difficulty feeding (infants) or is too sick to drink fluids
  • Severe abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting
  • Change in skin color - becoming pale, patchy and/or blue
  • Trouble breathing or is breathing very quickly
  • Racing heart or chest pain
  • Decreased amount of frequency in urine
  • Lethargy, irritability or confusion

The State Department of Health has issued an advisory about this serious inflammatory disease, called "Pediatric Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome Associated with COVID-19," to inform healthcare providers of the condition, as well as to provide guidance for testing and reporting. Health care providers, including hospitals, are required to report to the Department of Health all cases of pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome potentially associated with COVID-19 in those under 21 years of age.

NOW HIRING: New York State Contact Tracing Initiative

Would you like to become a part of the COVID-19 Contact Tracing Initiative? New York State is now seeking to fill three types of jobs: Contact Tracers, Team Supervisors and Community Support Specialists.

  • Contact Tracers are responsible for reaching out to the contacts of anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 to assess symptoms, ensure quarantine compliance and determine social support needs.
  • Team Supervisors lead a team of 20 Contact Tracers, and one Community Support Specialist who are working remotely, using digital tools.
  • Community Support Specialists work with the team and the local health departments to address the physical/mental health, and social/human service needs of each family, especially for those who are in isolation or under quarantine.

New York State plans to hire a team of 6,400 to 17,000 staff, to support the New York State Department of Health and local health departments in performing contact tracing in communities across the state. The final number of staff will also depend on the projected total number of COVID-19 cases. More information about how to apply to be a part of the New York State Contact Tracing Team can be found on the Westchester County Health Department Coronavirus Page or visit coronavirus.health.ny.gov/get-involved-how-you-can-help to apply.
