Housing and the COVID-19 Emergency by Mayor Tom Murphy

Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom MurphyDear Friends,

This is a difficult time for all but it is especially difficult for folks who are unemployed (or under employed) and who rent apartments. Many can’t afford to pay full rent and many can’t pay any rent. This puts enormous strain upon local landlords, many of whom are just ordinary folks just trying to secure an extra stream of income. I want to clarify what the law is under the COVID-19 emergency that Governor Cuomo has declared

There are two components for tenants. No eviction proceedings can be initiated or can proceed until August 6, 2020. Landlords must consider a request to use the security deposit for rent and must allow a tenant who is out of work to use the security deposit for rent.

It would behoove both tenants and landlords to work together to find compromise and show compassion during this difficult time. The landlords must realize that half a loaf is often better then nothing in these times. The tenants must acknowledge that they owe the rent and make a plan to pay once the economic situation improves. But NO landlord should under any circumstances be threatening families with eviction now. It is illegal and it is unkind. We will get through this by working together and cooperating. Letting the better angels of our nature guide us and not our fears.

Please continue to practice social distancing and wear a mask when you are outside. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Keep looking out for each other!

Courage,

Tom Murphy
Mayor, Village of Mamaroneck
