Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update for May 7, 2020

MAMARONECK, New York, May 7, 2020 — We offer the following announcements for today, Thursday, May 7:

Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom MurphyThe Need Grows Daily by Mayor Tom Murphy

Please read this New York Times story by Jason DeParle. As we move from the recession we are currently in to the depression that we will soon be facing please keep hunger in our community in the forefront of your mind.

Many of you who are out every day on the front lines may see the signs of hunger in families and especially children early on. Many folks are too proud to admit they are struggling. Some folks have no idea that there is help available locally.  Some folks wait too long to ask for help. If you think families might be in trouble please let me know and I will contact the folks who are working this problem everyday and have them reach out to those who need a hand.

I hope someday that the Federal government gets their act together and realizes that hunger in America is a completely and easily solvable problem. But we can’t wait for the Calvary to show up. We have to look out for each other and our Village residents now.

No kid in Mamaroneck should ever go to bed hungry! That is our goal in this community during this crisis.

Thank you to all who have opened your hearts and your wallets to the Larchmont Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force

I will be frank, the need is great and will grow in the near future. I know we will meet this challenge head on!

Courage,

Tom Murphy
Mayor, Village of Mamaroneck

From New York State

IMPORTANT: Please wear masks or face coverings in public!

If you are in a crowded area — you must wear a mask (or face covering). It is the smart and responsible thing to do and it is also the law!

New York State DOH

Governor Cuomo issued executive orders 202.17 requiring all people in New York to wear masks or face coverings in public. "Any individual who is over age two and able to medically tolerate a face-covering shall be required to cover their nose and mouth with a mask or cloth face-covering when in a public place and unable to maintain, or when not maintaining, social distance."

Help get this vital message out. All New Yorkers are invited to explain why wearing a mask in public is important in a video submission contest. The winning video will be used in a TV ad. Videos should be less than 30 seconds long and should show how to wear a mask properly, covering both the mouth and nose. The submission deadline is May 15th. Learn more at WearAMask.ny.gov. Business Benchmarks for Re-Opening

New York State Governor Cuomo has reviewed the process of exiting New York PAUSE. To begin the process, 8 benchmarks must first be met; after which businesses may reopen in four separate phases; each phase is comprised of different categories of business. For an understanding of this process, click here for the Reopening Reference Document as a PDF.

Westchester County Board of Elections SignAbsentee Ballot Applications to Arrive in the Mail

On Friday, April 24, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued Executive Order 202.23 requiring the New York State Board of Elections to automatically mail all registered voters in New York a postage-paid application for an absentee ballot for the June 23 primary election. (Earlier in the month, the Governor had issued an Executive Order allowing all New Yorkers to vote by absentee ballot in the primary.)

What voters will be mailed is an application for the absentee ballot, not the ballot itself.

The application will need to be filled out and returned in order for a ballot to be mailed to voters. Voters requesting the absentee ballot because they are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic or concern about contracting the virus should check the box for “Temporary illness.”

Voters may also download applications and return them to the Westchester County Board of Elections by mail, fax, e-mail or in person. Further instructions can be found by clicking here.
