Stop Mamaroneck Floods Petition

On September 2, 2021, flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Ida devastated the Village of Mamaroneck, NY. We desperately need the federal government’s help to mitigate the damage from future storms on our Village. The Army Corps of Engineers has published a Flood Risk Management Project for the Sheldrake and Mamaroneck rivers that is “shovel ready” and will significantly alleviate the impact of major flood events. However, federal funding for the project has stalled.

We demand funding the Army Corps of Engineers Flood Risk Management Project to deepen and widen the Sheldrake and Mamaroneck Rivers, as well as to construct retaining walls and diversion culverts.

Significant floods devastated the Village of Mamaroneck on September 2, 2021. The floods required evacuation of residents; many are still in temporary housing. Sadly, these experiences are not new to our Village. According to the Army Corps, Mamaroneck’s largest floods of record resulted from storms in 1955, 1972, 1975, and 2007. Since the time of that assessment, we have added floods from 2011, 2012, 2020, and now 2021 to that list.

In a press conference on Friday, September 3, in front of the Village’s Firehouse, New York State Governor Hochul and Westchester County Executive Latimer announced that New York State and Westchester County are committed to funding their portions of the project. We desperately need the Federal government to step up and fulfill its commitment before another disaster occurs.

I add my name to support this much needed Army Corps project in the Village of Mamaroneck.

We thank Governor Hochul for requesting and President Biden for approving the federal disaster assistance declaration. These actions are helping our recovery efforts. But without funding for the Army Corps of Engineers project, our need for future disaster funding is inevitable.
