Village Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Fenimore Rd and Prospect Ave Pedestrian Safety Initiative Project

June 1, 2022 (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) – The Village of Mamaroneck will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Fenimore Road and Prospect Avenue Pedestrian Safety Initiative Project on Friday, June 3rd, at 5:00pm at the intersection of Fenimore Road and Prospect Avenue in the Village of Mamaroneck.

Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy said: “In addition to many other capital infrastructure projects taking place around our Village, we look forward to work finally beginning on the Fenimore Road and Prospect Avenue Pedestrian Safety Initiative Project! The time for this important project has finally come and it will make our streets and sidewalks safer for everyone, especially our kids.”

After considerable input from the community to address pedestrian crossing concerns, as well as the preparation of walking assessment studies by the Village’s Traffic Safety Commission, the Project will include:

  • Landscaped “bumpouts” along the Fenimore Road that will shorten the pedestrian crossing distance on Fenimore Road and improve pedestrian visibility at the intersection.
  • An in-road pedestrian sign to warn drivers to yield to pedestrians and slow approaching traffic at the crosswalk.
  • At the Fenimore Road eastbound approach, “No Standing” signs will restrict parking for a length of 50 feet at the intersection. This parking restriction improves sight lines at the intersection as a roadway daylighting improvement.
  • A striped parking lane at the intersection along Fenimore Road, extending to adjacent intersections, to visually delineate the vehicle travel lane and calm traffic.
  • Marked crosswalks at the Prospect Avenue northbound and southbound approaches, and the Fenimore Road westbound approach.

The Fenimore Road and Prospect Avenue Pedestrian Safety Initiative Project complements several other capital infrastructure projects currently taking place in the Village, such as the application for Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to enhance pedestrian and student safety in the vicinity of the Mamaroneck Avenue School, and the replacement of sidewalks in the vicinity of Waverly Avenue, East Prospect Avenue, as well as 169 Mount Pleasant Avenue and the Mamaroneck Public Library.

At their June 14, 2021, Work Session, the Village’s Board of Trustees reviewed (4) four pedestrian safety enhancements including the preparation of detailed design documents. They then voted on the matter at their July 12, 2021, Regular Meeting (scroll to pages 15 and 16). The documents incorporated suggested improvements to:

  • The Prospect Avenue/Fenimore Road intersection,
  • The installation of a sidewalk on Old Post Road connecting the Orienta neighborhood to West Boston Post Road (US Route 1),
  • Improvements to the Old White Plains Road/Grand Street Intersection,
  • The installation of a new sidewalk on the west side of Orienta Avenue between Old Post Road and Hall Street.
