Village of Mamaroneck Food Scraps Pick-Up Program

ATTENTION FOOD SCRAPS SUBSCRIBERS:

The Village of Mamaroneck is pleased to announce a weekly Food Scraps Pickup Program for single-family homes. Residents who live in single-family homes in the Village of Mamaroneck's Harbor Heights, Heathcote Hill, Orienta and Shore Acres, and Rye Neck neighborhoods can call the Village’s Department of Public Works (DPW) at 914-777-7745  to be placed on the food scraps pick-up list. Residents will be asked to provide their name, address, phone number, and email address.

There is a $52 annual subscription fee to be enrolled in the Food Scraps Pick-Up Program. Click here for information about the subscription fee and how to pay it.

To enroll in the Food Scraps Pickup pilot program:

  1. Individuals MUST be Village of Mamaroneck residents. This will be strictly enforced.
  2. Residents can register on a rolling basis. However, you must be on the pre-approved list for 7-days prior to your first pick up.
  3. Please follow the details in the Village of Mamaroneck Composting Program flyer – paying close attention to the “Accepted Items” and “Items Not Accepted” sections.
  4. Food scraps MUST be placed in compostable bags, which must then be placed in a closed container. Placing food scraps into a closed container helps prevent animal intrusion. The closed container can either be
    1. the large, lidded green “transportation” food scrap bucket* OR
    2. a similar closed container labeled “Food Scraps”, so our DPW crew can see it.
  5. Food scrap buckets must be placed 10-15 feet away from the curb, but NOT on the curb or on the sidewalk.
  6. Food scraps buckets must be placed outside by 7:00am.

*Food Scrap kits, including compostable bags as well as the large, lidded green transportation food scraps bucket, can be purchased at the Village’s Department of Public Works at 313 Fayette Avenue. Click here for more information.

To ensure residents (1) who live in the Village and (2) who reside in single-family homes are signing-up for the program, you must call the Village’s DPW to register.

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. Currently, apartments, condominiums and other multi-family dwellings are NOT part of the program. In the future, we hope to develop a plan for these multi-family dwellings; however, we anticipate a larger fee will be required.
  2. The Village’s Recycling Center at 313 Fayette Avenue is OPEN Mondays-Fridays, 7:00am to 3:30pm, and on Saturdays, 9:00am to 1:00pm. However, please note that hours of operations are subject to change without notice.
  3. This program DOES NOT apply to residents whose garbage is collected by the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Joint Sanitation Commission.
  4. If you have any questions or should you wish to be removed from the pilot program, please call the Village’s DPW at (914) 777-7745.

Said Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy, “Food scraps are one of the largest components of trash sent to landfills and incinerators. However, food scraps are not trash, they are a resource that can be turned into useful compost. Recycling food scraps into compost captures their nutrients and energy and returns them to the environment. I encourage my Village of Mamaroneck friends and neighbors who live in single-family dwellings to register for this pilot program. I want to thank the Village's Department of Public Works for making this pilot program possible and I also want to thank the Village of Mamaroneck Committee for the Environment for spearheading this initiative!”

Ellen Silver, Chair of the Village’s Committee for the Environment, said, “Since 2018, the Village’s food scraps recycling program has collected over 150 tons of food scraps; diverting food scraps into a valuable product that gives back to our nutrient life cycle. I want to thank my fellow members of the Village’s Committee for the Environment for their help in championing this program. With residents in single family homes now able to have their food scraps picked up through this pilot program, we hope to see more and more residents recycling their food scraps!”
