Mayor's Message Re Weather 01/18/2019

Dear Friends,

The Village is preparing for a major storm with sleet, snow and rain conditions that will impact our region beginning early Saturday night lasting into Sunday evening. It is anticipated that the snow-sleet mixture will begin around 5pm with a period of moderate to heavy rain late Saturday night into Sunday morning and then a possible return to a wintry mix. Current estimates are that we could see anywhere from 2” – 6” of wet-heavy snow and up to a ¼” of ice accompanied by sustained winds of 15-25 MPH and occasional gusts of up to 45 MPH. Minor Coastal flooding of 1-2’ above ground is likely. While the storm will pass by Sunday evening, temperatures are expected to the single digits with wind chills of minus 10. Our plows and salt trucks are at the ready. Barricades have been strategically placed near potential flooding areas. The dam on Mamaroneck Avenues weep holes have been checked to make sure they are clear. In short all necessary measures are being taken by our staff.

The combination of wet heavy snow, icing conditions, sustained winds, and freezing conditions creates the potential for downed trees and power lines and outages.

Safety suggestions:

  • Do not go near downed wires. Never attempt to move them or touch them with any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by snow, tree limbs, leaves or water.
  • Report downed wires to Con Edison at 1-80-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633) and your local police department immediately by calling 911. If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.
  • If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.
  • Make sure your flashlights and battery-operated radios are working. Have a supply of extra batteries.

I urge everyone to take the proper precautions which include staying off the roads during this storm. If you must drive during the storm remember the secret to driving in any snow storm.....drive very slowly!

I want to thank our first responders including DPW staff, Police, Fire and EMS who will be working during this storm to keep our Village safe. Their devotion to their duty and to Mamaroneck is unparalleled. Work safely!

Respectfully,

Tom Murphy Mayor,
Village of Mamaroneck
