How To Prepare Your Food Scraps Bucket for Pick-Up

Updated June 1, 2023

Thank you for registering for the Food Scraps Pick Up Pilot Program from the Village of Mamaroneck! We have put together this webpage to help you as you prepare your Food Scraps bucket for pickup.

  1. Please follow the details in the Village of Mamaroneck Composting Program flyer – paying close attention to the “Accepted Items” and “Items Not Accepted” sections.
  2. Food scraps MUST be placed in compostable bags, which must then be placed in a closed container. Placing food scraps into a closed container helps prevent animal intrusion. The closed container can be:
    1. the large, lidded green “transportation” food scraps bucket that came with your Food Scraps kit OR
    2. a similar closed container labeled “Food Scraps”, so our DPW crew can see it.
    3. Containers must be no greater than 10 gallons.
  3. Food scrap buckets must be placed 10-15 feet away from the curb, but NOT on the curb or on the sidewalk. (Placing food scrap buckets away from the curb helps our DPW crews perform their pick-up duties safely and in a reasonable amount of time.)
  4. Food scrap buckets must be placed outside by 7:00am.

While every attempt will be made to visit every house that signed up for the Food Scraps Pilot Pick Up program, please understand that unforeseen issues may arise. We continue to fine-tune and hone the pick-up process and we thank you all for your patience and understanding.

REMEMBER:

  1. The Village’s Recycling Center at 313 Fayette Avenue will be CLOSED on Wednesdays until additional staff can be hired to adjust to this new service.
  2. The Food Scraps Pickup Schedule is now on the Recycle Right Westchester app. Download the Recycle Right Westchester app to receive alerts about Food Scraps pickup cancellations, schedule changes and more. You can also use the app to access the Recyclopedia or to lookup YOUR household's garbage/rubbish pickup schedule. Visit the Sanitation Pickup Schedule webpage or download the Recycle Right Westchester app from the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
  3. If you have any questions or should you wish to be removed from the pilot program, please call the Village’s DPW at (914) 777-7745.

We want to thank all the Village residents who have signed-up for this pilot program. We know how passionate you are about Food Scraps recycling. Your attention to the above details (especially the “Accepted Items” and “Items Not Accepted” sections in the Village of Mamaroneck Composting Program flyer) ensures we have quality food scraps. We also want to thank the Village’s Committee for the Environment for spearheading and championing this initiative. Finally, our thanks to the employees of the Village’s Department of Public Works for making this pilot program possible. If you happen to see a DPW worker or crew picking up food scraps, please thank them.
