Traffic Commission

In 1973, the Village’s Board of Trustees established the Board of Traffic Commissioners. The Traffic Commission is comprised of nine volunteers who serve as advisors to the Village's leadership, with seven community members and two ex-officio members, one each from the Village’s Fire Department and Police Department. While its original scope was mainly limited to traffic controls and parking issues, the Commission in recent years has adopted a more pro-active, data-driven and safety-focused approach to our Village’s streets. Research shows that 94% of all traffic collisions* are caused by human error, and so the Traffic Commission acknowledges that crashes are no "accident," but are instead preventable incidents. By partnering with our local, County and State engineers and planners, public health and advocacy experts, the Village’s Police Department, residents, and the Traffic Commission are pursuing a collaborative approach to traffic safety.  From leading Walking Safety Assessments of Mamaroneck's roadways (see left column) to partnering with the Mamaroneck Safe Routes to School Coalition to pursuing membership with the national Vision Zero Network, the Traffic Commission is actively supporting a more equitable, safe, accessible roadway system in our Village.

Please refer to the Village’s online calendar to see the exact date as well as information for participating as an attendee in the online Zoom meeting. Please note that agenda items (including Traffic Incident Reports) must be submitted at least 7 days in advance of the Traffic Commission meeting in order to provide Commission members time to review materials. Items submitted less than 7 days before a Traffic Commission meeting will be considered the following month.
