Walking Safety Assessment w/Traffic Commission

Event Date:
Friday, November 15, 2019 - 2:30pm

On behalf of the Village of Mamaroneck Traffic Commission, we are pleased to invite you to participate in a Walking Safety Assessment at 2:30PM on Friday, November 15, 2019 at the Mamaroneck Town Center Court Room (740 West Boston Post Road), covering Old Post Road and portions of the Orienta Avenue, Rushmore Avenue, and Boston Post Road corridors.

Local roadways can and should be shared safely by vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and making our roadways accessible for the most vulnerable users helps achieve a safer environment for all.  As outlined in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s national action plan, “Safer People, Safer Streets:  Summary of U.S. Department of Transportation Action Plan to Increase Walking and Biking and Reduce Pedestrian and Bicycle Fatalities,” the multidisciplinary approach our Commission is undertaking holds promise to make safe walking and biking a reality for all Mamaroneck residents, regardless of age, income, or ability.

The Walking Safety Assessment will join up to 25 local residents with key partners representing transportation, planning, engineering, enforcement, emergency services, policymaking and public health for a one-day observational visit.  Assessment participants will experience, observe and evaluate the roadway environment from the perspective of their different fields of expertise.  The resulting report will then be shared with the Mayor, Board of Trustees and Village Manager, as well as other key partners with jurisdiction in this area of the Village, so that they may consider the most suitable countermeasures to reduce the risk of crashes along these corridors.

To maximize efficiency and productive dialogue, the 25 resident participants will be identified on a first come, first served basis, with additional residents invited to attend the opening and closing briefings.  Please confirm you or your designee’s attendance with Shannon Purdy no later than Wednesday, November 15th, at purdyshannonl@gmail.com, or 845-825-1832 to allow ample time for the operational plan to be finalized.  Let Shannon or I know, too, if you have any questions.

Many thanks in advance; we look forward to meeting you on November 15!
