Harbor Island Beach by Mayor Tom Murphy

Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom MurphyDear Friends,

I am writing to explain the rules and the temporarily off limits access to water at the beach. Less then a week ago Gov. Cuomo decided that beaches would be allowed to open in New York State but at 50% of normal capacity. (This regulation applies to us also.) Our beach is currently open but water access is currently not permitted.

The Village had lifeguards lined up to work this summer but when the time came to open the beach many of the youngsters and their parents had second thoughts about the safety of the job. As a father, I understand the concern and the reluctance but this has left us without adequate life guard coverage. Village staff is working diligently to find lifeguards and remedy the situation but that won’t happen over night..

The health emergency that we are all living through requires constant improvising and adjustment. We will look to remedy this situation as soon as possible. Until then I apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience as we try to adapt to these ever changing situations.

Happy Memorial Day to all. Please remember to social distance, wear a mask and keep washing hands often with soap and water.

Courage,

Tom Murphy
Mayor, Village of Mamaroneck
