Harbor Island Spray Park Ribbon Cutting – June 8th 10:00 a.m.

MAMARONECK, NY - June 3, 2019 – The Village of Mamaroneck Parks and Recreation Department will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Stephen E. Johnston Beach in Harbor Island Park.

In 2002, the Village of Mamaroneck installed the current spray park facility in Harbor Island Park on the Stephen E. Johnston Beach.  The popular spray park has hosted thousands of children and families since its inception and has provided an alternative for little children to cool off on a hot summer day. In 2019, the Village approved a renovation project for the spray park to improve the surface safety and to add new and exciting spray features. The new features in the renovation include a 12-foot wavy palm tree and seahorse. The spray park additionally features wall sprays, cylinder sprayers as well as multiple ground sprayers (including fountain, geyser and jet stream sprayers). Located directly on the beach, the spray park enables children to make sand castles while cooling off in the spray park and gives parents a moment to relax.

Mayor Thomas Murphy said, “The spray ground at Harbor Island Beach has been a hit with Mamaroneck children for the past 16 years. I am happy to see it newly renovated and given a facelift to keep another generation of children cool and entertained during many summers to come.”

“The Harbor Island Spray Park has been enormously successful. The Recreation Board decided to spend the funds to update it so residents can be safe and continue to have fun. Further enhancements are currently being evaluated,” said Randi Robinowitz, Chairperson of the Recreation & Parks Commission.

Harbor Island Park has been coined the “Jewel of Mamaroneck” in part because the beautiful 44.5-acre park overlooks one of the loveliest harbors situated in the Long Island Sound. Its sweeping vistas and proximity to Mamaroneck Village’s shopping district make the park a vital resource for the community. Westchester residents are drawn to the park for athletic events such as baseball, soccer, tennis, boating, and fishing. Additional attractions include community events, The Marine Education Center, the playground, and the beautiful gardens – all contributing to a visitor’s enjoyment of nature.
