Village of Mamaroneck Announces Two New Swing Sets (And More!) for Columbus Park

“All I want are swings in my park for my son,” said community leader Pereese Jackson, a comment that sparked collective action to work on and further beautify local park.

The Village of Mamaroneck is pleased to announce the completion of two new swing sets at Columbus Park. The new swing sets will be officially opened to the community at a special Beautification Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Saturday, November 7th at 10:00am in Columbus Park. Residents are invited to attend the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and are reminded to wear face masks and maintain social distancing (6 feet) protocols. Masks and hand sanitizer will also be distributed.

“We are thrilled to be cutting the ribbon on these two new swing sets,” said Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy. “This new playground equipment is a welcome addition by the families and residents who use Columbus Park. What child doesn’t enjoy a swing? I want to thank Pereese Jackson for his comment that inspired our Village and a collection of partner organizations to beautify and enhance  this local park!”

The first swing set (located adjacent to the Columbus Park Basketball Court) is an Expression Swing, which is designed to promote intergenerational play as adults and children swing together. The face-to-face design features a bucket seat for children under five and a comfortable adult swing seat that allows a parent and child (or grandparent and grandchild) to interact with each other and experience one another's facial expressions while at play. The second swing set located closer to Mamaroneck Avenue is a Two-Bay Traditional Swing Set with a Shade Frame. The fabric shade is designed to block up to 97% of harmful UV rays. Both swing sets are manufactured by GameTime, an industry leader in creating meaningful play experiences with innovative products. Two outdoor hand sanitizing stations – one at each playground – were also installed.

Both swing sets were funded through the Village’s Recreation Trust Fund account which is used exclusively for parks, playgrounds or other recreational purposes.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new swing sets mark the culmination of some recent park beautification projects that were led by the Village’s partners-in-the-community:

  • On Saturday, October 24th, a group of dedicated volunteers from the Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club, the Girl Scouts of Larchmont – Mamaroneck (and one Boy Scout from Troop 2 of Mamaroneck), the Community Resource Center, and the Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Village’s Parks & Recreation Department to clean up the park and banks of the Mamaroneck River and Sheldrake River.

  • Also on Saturday, October 24th, through the leadership efforts of Mamaroneck resident Jarrett Winchester, a beautiful Black Lives Matter Mural was painted along the northern border of Columbus Park on Van Ranst Place.

  • The Community Resource Center worked together with a group of students from Iona College to put together a Columbus Park Beautification Survey in English and Spanish to study additional uses for Columbus Park.

Located north of the Mamaroneck MetroNorth Train Station, Columbus Park is centrally located in the Village of Mamaroneck and serves families and residents of Mamaroneck’s Washingtonville and Rye Neck neighborhoods. It is one of the Village’s 14 parks and is maintained by a dedicated staff from the Village’s Parks & Recreation Department.

Stay tuned as we look forward to announcing exciting events and future enhancements to Columbus Park!
