Village of Mamaroneck Announcements

The Numbers Keep Climbing: 72.2% of Village Completes 2020 Census; Breaking 20-Year Response Rate from 2000 Census!

Census Thermometer at 71%BREAKING NEWS: Yesterday, an Order Regarding Clarification of Stay and Preliminary Injunction was issued in the National Urban League v. Wilbur L. Ross case for violations of the Enumeration Clause and the Administrative Procedure Act. The order clarifies the scope of the Court’s Injunction Order and states that the October 5th “target date” is not operative, and that Census data collection operations will continue through October 31, 2020.

The United States Census Bureau has announced that 72.2% of households in the Village of Mamaroneck have now completed their 2020 Census questionnaires, breaking the Village’s 20-year participation rate from the 2000 Census!

Village residents who have yet to complete their Census are reminded that there is still time to complete their Census questionnaires. Remember:

  • There are no questions about immigration, citizenship or financial information and responses are 100% confidential.
  • The more of us who fill out the Census, the more money our community will receive from the federal government for hospitals, healthcare, schools and housing over the next 10 years.
  • The census is for everyone: every race, every nationality, every religion. Whether you are a citizen or non-citizen, on the lease or off the lease -- you should fill out the census!

Census takers are now visiting households who have not responded. These Census takers know to follow public health guidelines when they visit residences, wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing. The Census takers can be identified by their valid government ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.

Remember, you don't need to be visited by a Census taker to complete the Census! You can STILL complete your 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail.

To complete the Census Questionnaire online, please visit My2020Census.gov

Leaves On GroundOperation of Leaf Blowers is Permitted Until May 14th

Beginning Thursday, October 1st, Leaf Blowers are allowed in the Village of Mamaroneck. The operation of leaf blowers, as per the Village of Mamaroneck's Leaf Blower Law, is permitted between October 1st and May 14th.

Love the autumn but dread the annual leaf cleanup? This fall season, try something different. Instead of spending untold hours (or dollars) blowing, raking, or dragging leaves, try mulching-in-place. The Village of Mamaroneck is one of over 22 proud municipalities of the Love 'Em and Leave 'Em initiative. Learn how to reduce organic yard waste from your property by visiting www.leleny.org.

Tree Law ImageProposed Local Tree Law

The Board of Trustees continues working on and fine-tuning Proposed Local Law B - 2020. The proposed law will be revised, thanks in part to comments from the public and the Village's land use boards. This law will amend Chapter 318 of the Village Code regarding the regulation of trees in the Village of Mamaroneck. This law potentially effects every property owner who has a tree.

Writes Mayor Tom Murphy, "The law is intended to save and protect our suburban forest and put the proper value on our trees from which we all derive so much benefit. Please take the time to read the law and contact the Board of Trustees with your thoughts at mayorandboard@vomny.org. I also wish to thank the Village's Tree Committee for working long and hard over many years to try and fashion a law that will work for Mamaroneck."

Please note that comments posted to Facebook (or any other social media page) WILL NOT become part of the official record. You must write a comment to the email addresses listed above in order to make sure your comment is taken into consideration.

Volunteers Needed ImageAnnouncing New Ad-Hoc Police Reform and Reinvention Advisory Committee per Gov. Cuomo EO 203

The Village of Mamaroneck is now soliciting resident volunteers to serve on the new Ad-Hoc Police Reform and Reinvention Advisory Committee. Earlier this year, on June 12th, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Executive Order 203 to reinvent and modernize police strategies and programs – requiring every police department in New York State to develop a reform plan with community input. For every municipality’s police department, the plan:

  • Must address policies, procedures, practices, and deployment.
  • Must certify that they have engaged stakeholders in a public and open process on policing strategies and tools.
  • Must be presented to the public for comment.
  • Must have a legislative body certify the plan.

The Village of Mamaroneck’s Ad Hoc Police Reform and Reinvention Advisory Committee will be composed of seven individuals who are Village residents, the Village Manager, Chief of Police and Village Attorney. This committee will meet twice per month in the early afternoon (via ZOOM) in November, December and January 2021 with a public hearing held in February 2021 and a final plan submitted to New York State on March 31st. Individuals interested in volunteering and serving on this new ad-hoc committee should submit a letter of interest and resume to clerktreasurer@vomny.org.

Volunteers Are Also Needed for the Following Village Citizen Committees

Individuals interested in volunteering and serving on any of these committees should submit a letter of interest and a resume to clerktreasurer@vomny.org.

NYS Covid-19 App ImageNew York State Department of Health: Get Covid-19 Exposure Alerts

Contact tracing has been instrumental in stopping the COVID spread, and New York State has worked hard over these past months to establish a nation-leading testing and tracing program. New York State continues to build on that effort with an additional innovative technology-based tool — COVID Alert NY — NYS's official Exposure Notification App created by the New York State Department of Health in partnership with Google and Apple. With COVID Alert NY, you can use your phone to receive alert notifications if you have been exposed without compromising your privacy or personal information.

The app will never track your location and is completely anonymous. Using Bluetooth technology, it can detect proximity to another phone with COVID Alert NY downloaded. The State Department of Health cannot identify who downloads the app, and does not collect your name, phone number or other personal information.

As we continue to battle the virus, this app offers another way to protect yourself and your community. The more New Yorkers who download the app, the more effective it is. Get the app today and help stop the spread while maintaining your privacyClick here to download it directly to your iPhone.
