Weather & Holiday Sanitation Schedule Announcements as of Dec. 21st at 6:00pm

The following is an announcement about the approaching rainstorm as well as the Village’s holiday sanitation schedule. Because this approaching storm has the potential to impact our Village’s coastal residences and properties along the Long Island Sound, this announcement differs from many of our typical storm announcements.

According to the National Weather Service, periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread moderate to locally major coastal flooding is forecast for our area from Thursday evening, December 22nd, into Saturday morning, December 24th.

The forecast rainfall amounts could range from 1.5- to 2.5- inches with a worst-case scenario of 3.0- inches possible. The heaviest rain is expected from Thursday evening through early Friday morning. In advance of this storm, please note the following:

  • Our DPW employees are making sure drains are free of any leaves. You can help. PLEASE DO NOT RAKE OR BLOW LEAVES INTO THE STREET. Doing so presents a safety hazard and flooding concern when leaves are washed into storm drains.
  • If you are concerned about parking your vehicle on Village streets, you can utilize the Village’s parking lots, which are free until 8am on Tuesday, December 27th. This includes the Hunter Tier Lot on Prospect Avenue (across from the Village’s Police Station) and the Phillips Park Road parking lot. Residents who normally park their vehicles in the Village’s flood prone areas can move their vehicles to these FREE parking lots.
  • Please bring inside (or tie down) any items – including Christmas decorations – that could be impacted by high winds.
  • If you are going away for the holidays, please inform your neighbors and let them know how to contact you in case of an emergency.
  • There is potential for a significant storm surge along the Long Island Sound, especially for our residences and properties in the Orienta and Shore Acres neighborhoods. Residents in these areas should be prepared if high tides are higher than usual. Also, more extreme tides are possible because there will be a new moon on Friday. While the current outlook forecasts significant rainfall to be over before hightide at 10:25am on Friday morning; strong winds may still impact the situation.

If you are in a dangerous situation and need immediate help, call 911. If you see flooding or a downed power line, call the police desk at (914) 777-1122. NEVER approach a downed power line even if you think it is deactivated. Please wait for professionals to assess the situation to make sure it is safe. If you lose power, call Con Ed at 1-800-752-6633 or visit ConEd.Com.

We also want to take this opportunity to share the following reminders about the Village’s sanitation schedule:

  • For Friday, December 23, normal garbage pickup will take place as scheduled for those households who normally have their garbage picked-up on a Friday. Because of the storm, we recommend waiting until 5:00am on Friday, December 23rd, to bring garbage to the curb.
  • For Monday, December 26, there will be no garbage collection.
  • The Recycling Center (including the Compost Drop-Off Program) at 313 Fayette Avenue will be closed to the public on Friday, December 23rd; Saturday, December 24th; Sunday, December 25th; AND Monday, December 26th.
