National Weather Service Issues Coastal Flood Watch and Gale Warning

National Weather Service 2023-03-03 SMALL PNG

Download the latest update from the National Weather Service as of March 3, 2023, at 5:23 PM.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Watch and Gale Warning for our area. A low pressure system will bring a wintry mix, as well as heavy rain, gusty winds, and minor to moderate coastal flooding this evening, Friday, March 3rd, into Saturday morning, March, 4th. 1" to 1.5” of total rainfall is likely with 2.0” possible. Please monitor weather reports from the National Weather Service and from local media as well as www.villageofmamaroneck.org for new updates.

In advance of this weather event, please note the following:

  • The Village Manager has authorized FREE PARKING for Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4, on the Hunter Tier Lot on Prospect Avenue (across from the Village’s Police Station) and the Parking Lot along Phillips Park Road. Residents who normally park their vehicles in the Village’s flood prone areas can move their vehicles to these parking lots.
  • There will likely be a period of strong, gusty winds with this event Friday night into early Saturday. Wind gusts 35 to 45 mph are possible. Please bring inside (or tie down) any items that could be impacted by high winds.
  • Marine impacts are probable with this system Friday into Saturday with a period of elevated seas and gale-force winds. Minor beach erosion is also possible.

LMC Media Community Stories - Parallel Mitigation Efforts

Mayor Tom MurphyDear Friends,

The Village is exploring many different paths to try and mitigate flooding in our community. The cornerstone of that effort is the Army Corps of Engineers plan which is making steady (but slower then we would like) progress. Bear in mind that the ACE plan was dead on August 2021 killed by the previous federal administration. It was only revived after the flood by the lobbying of elected officials and residents.

The Village has recently purchased our own equipment to use in the rivers to remove obstructions and improve flow of water through our community and out into the Sound. We are exploring the feasibility of placing pumps at the confluence of the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake rivers to speed water through the bottle necks in that area. We are also exploring the dam up by the waterworks to decide the best course of action to deal with that structure with the goal of controlling flooding.

Please watch the video below which provides more information. Thanks to LMC media for creating the video!

A Note about Village Meetings

As of September 13, 2022, Governor Hochul's Executive Order 11.9, which allowed for the videoconferencing option for public meetings, ended. IN PERSON public meetings of the Village of Mamaroneck (Boards, Commissions, and Committees) are now being held. The elected or appointed members of these public bodies must attend these meetings IN PERSON. When an elected or appointed member of a public body cannot attend the meeting in person, the Village of Mamaroneck may hold remote meetings through the use of videoconferencing per Local Law 4-2022.

Meeting locations can be found on the Village’s online calendar. Members of the public who wish to participate in these meetings may also attend these meetings IN PERSON. Occasionally, and at the discretion of the Chair and/or Trustee Liaison of the public body, videoconferencing (i.e. Zoom) may be available and publicized on the Village’s online calendar should members of the public wish to participate in the meeting through videoconferencing.

As always, meetings for the Village’s Board of Trustee as well as the Land Use Boards (the Board of Architectural Review, the Harbor and Coastal Zone Management Commission, the Planning Board, and the Zoning Board of Appeals) can be viewed on LMC Media or via LMC Media’s YouTube Channel.
