After Intense Floods on September 30th, Village of Mamaroneck Rebounds and Recovers
After record-breaking rains flooded the Village on Friday, the Village of Mamaroneck is continuing its clean-up work that began on Saturday and resuming its regular business serving its 20,000+ residents.
"Friday’s storm rivaled Hurricane Ida, which swept through and devastated Mamaroneck in September 2021," said Village of Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy. "Fortunately, the damage from Friday’s storm was significantly less."

Join us for the fourth annual Scarecrow Build at Harbor Island Park. Build your very own scarecrow and decorate pumpkins with your family. Completed scarecrows with name tags will be displayed along "Scarecrow Trail" (Mamaroneck Avenue) throughout the month of October. The fee for residents to participate is $45.00 per scarecrow ($55.00 per scarecrow for non-residents). All materials EXCEPT clothing are included. Columbus Day (All Non-Emergency Village Offices Are Closed) - Monday, October 9
All Non-Emergency Village offices are closed in honor of Columbus Day. There will be no garbage, food scrap, organic, rubbish, or recycling collection on Monday, October 9. The Recycling Center, including the Compost Drop-Off Program, at 313 Fayette Avenue and the Marine Education Center at Harbor Island Park are also closed.

On Wednesday, October 4, officers from the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department and community members came together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. The event took place at the McDonalds at 1205 W Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck from 08:00am to 10:00am. Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department and its members.
Operation of Leaf Blowers is Now Permitted (Until May 14, 2024)
Beginning on October 1st, Leaf Blowers are allowed in the Village of Mamaroneck. The operation of leaf blowers, as per the Village of Mamaroneck's Leaf Blower Law, is permitted from October 1st to May 14, 2024.
Please remember that leaves, clippings, brush, and other small branches should be contained in a biodegradable brown paper bag or open garbage can (with drain holes at the bottom) and placed at the curb. PLEASE DO NOT PILE LEAVES OR GRASS AT THE CURB OR ON MEDIANS OR ISLANDS ON YOUR STREET. The Village's Department of Public Works (DPW) Leaf Pickup Schedule for 2023 can be found here. Please keep in mind that although DPW makes every attempt to adhere to this schedule, collection may be a day or two ahead or behind of schedule schedule depending on the weather.
Love the autumn but dread the annual leaf cleanup? This fall season, try something different. Instead of spending untold hours (or dollars) blowing, raking, or dragging leaves, try mulching-in-place. Our friends and colleagues at the Town of Mamaroneck will host a Repair Cafe on Sunday, October 15, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the Mamaroneck Senior Center at 1288 Boston Post Road. Have an item needing repair? Don't toss it and add to the waste stream. Let's fix it together! Spooktacular - Sunday, October 22
Grab your trick or treat bag, dress up as your favorite character and join us for our Annual Spooktacular Halloween parade and festivities taking place on Sunday, October 22, 2023. Goblins and ghouls, witches and ghosts meet in front of Smashburger at 448 Mamaroneck Avenue for check-in/arrival at 11:00 am. The parade starts at 11:30am and marches down Mamaroneck Avenue to spooky Harbor Island Park, where holiday fun, candy and activities are planned for your little monster starting at 12:15pm. Festivities taking place include a bubble show performance, pumpkin decorating, face painting, a balloon artist and a best costume contest. Let the spooky season begin!

Turkey Trot - Sunday, November 19
The Village of Mamaroneck Parks and Recreation Department welcomes runners and spectators for the 57th annual Turkey Trot and Gobbler Race! The event will be held on Sunday, November 19th at Harbor Island Park. Race day registration opens at 8:00am. The 1-mile Gobbler Race will begin at 9:45am and the 5K Turkey Trot will begin after completion of Gobbler Race. All registrants will receive a free t-shirt and medal. Spotted Lanternfly
Multiple reports from Mamaroneck and all over Westchester of the Spotted Lanternfly have been submitted to the State's Department of Agriculture and Markets
Lycorma delicatula, or Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), is an invasive plant hopper from Asia. In the United States, it was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014. Spotted Lanternfly has been found in New York State. SLF threatens the agriculture and forestry industries, and is also a nuisance pest. The nymphs and adults feed on over 70 different plants with piercing sucking mouthparts.

- You can help the Department of Agriculture and Markets by reporting SLF immediately after it is found. Follow these steps:
- Take a photo
- Collect a sample and place it in a freezer or in a jar with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer
- Contact the SLF responders
After you have reported SLF in your area and collected a sample, you should kill any additional SLF you see by stepping on it or crushing it.
2023 Mosquito Season
The Village of Mamaroneck is actively monitoring for mosquito activity as part of our Village’s mosquito control program. Since 2019, the Village has been using Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti), a naturally occurring bacterium found in soils, in order to treat the Village’s catch basins and the marshes in the Shore Acres neighborhood*. Bti is an effective tool that reduces the mosquito population while minimizing the amount of pesticide materials being sprayed or “fogged” into the air. Click here to read more.

Village of Mamaroneck Tree Law
Trees help sustain an ecological system that provides climatic advantages to people and wildlife alike: cooling the air, buffering the wind and providing a natural barrier to noise. Conserving these natural assets was the impetus behind a decision by the Village of Mamaroneck's Board of Trustees (with support from the Tree Committee) to vote on and enact a new tree law. On October 12, 2021, the Village passed a local law making property owners in the village responsible for the maintenance of trees on their property, including their removal. The penalty for failing to follow this new law is a fine or $1,050 or more. The law is intended to preserve our trees, which provide numerous benefits, including the reduction of air pollution, increase to the tree canopy, and the improvement of the drainage and maintenance of a healthy eco-system. Studies show that a minimum tree canopy cover of 40% is the threshold needed to reap the full benefits of trees. A goal of the Board of Trustees, supported by the Tree Committee, is to achieve this minimum tree canopy coverage and maintain it on an ongoing basis. The Tree Committee as well as the Building Department has put together the following resources to help educate and inform residents about our Village's Tree Law.

As of September 2, Westchester County’s “Upon Request” Law Aimed at Curbing Use of Single-Use Foodware Is Now In Effect
In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, Westchester County is reminding residents and business owners of its "Upon Request" single-use foodware law, which took effect on September 2. This legislation aims to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics by promoting a more mindful approach to their usage within food service establishments by limiting the use of single-use foodware products to only when specifically requested by the customer. Empty Slips at the Marina Available for Rent
Empty slips at the marina for boats of varying sizes are now available for rent. The Village of Mamaroneck Harbor Master oversees and administers all vessels located within the waterways of Harbor Island, assigns each applicant a slip space, and is responsible for maintaining records of dock and mooring assignments. Partner-in-the-Community: State Senator Shelley Mayer and and Assemblyman Steve Otis Announce Legislation to Protect Shorelines
After Hurricane Ida, many constituents reached out to State Senator Shelley Mayer for assistance with flood damage. "I was happy my office could help individuals," said Senator Mayer, "But the systemic impact of climate change requires much more. As the community rebuilds once again following the devastating storm this past week, we need to be proactive about increasing resilience and protecting against future flooding."
This week, Assemblyman Steve Otis and State Senator Shelley Mayer held a press conference to announce that their “living shorelines” legislation has been signed into law by Governor Hochul. As storms become more frequent, intense, and dangerous due to climate change, our communities become more vulnerable to these threats. This legislation will empower the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to encourage the use of nature-based solutions, strengthening our shorelines and communities. Living Shorelines will reduce flooding and erosion and strengthen resilience. Special thanks to Save the Sound, Riverkeeper, and the Nature Conservancy for their work; Assemblyman Steve Otis for his partnership; and Governor Kathy Hochul for signing it into law. Also thank you to County Legislator Catherine Parker, Nancy Seligson the Co-Chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee of the National Estuary Program for Long Island Sound, Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney, Village of Mamaroneck Deputy Mayor Lou Young, and Village of Larchmont Mayor Sarah Bauer for participating in the announcement.

Major funding for LMC Media comes from the cable franchise fees, collected by the Town and Village of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont from the two cable providers Altice and Verizon. While a significant portion of LMC Media’s operating budget comes from these franchise fees, the franchise fees alone do not cover the full cost of running the LMC Media: the remaining gap needs to be made up from other sources such as donations and the LMC Gala. Donate to the Mamaroneck Public Library
The Mamaroneck Public Library needs your help. The Village of Mamaroneck has agreed to loan the Library $1.4 million to remain open, but the loan will need to be repaid in one year. Partner-in-the-Community: Free Community Class: Reduce Food Waste with Delicious Recipes from Renowned Local Chef Adam Kaye
NEW DATE: Wednesday, October 18, 7pm-8pm, Town of Mamaroneck's Senior Center
Join Adam Kaye, chef and co-founder of The Spare Food Co., and former Culinary Director at Blue Hill Restaurant, for a cooking demonstration that strives to solve the nagging question of what to do with those odds and ends in your fridge. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways that we can draw down carbon in the atmosphere and reverse the effects of climate change. Adam will demonstrate creative ways that we can all minimize waste while maximizing flavor in our kitchens. This class will provide you with an overview of the global issue of waste in our food system, and you’ll leave with simple recipes you’ll be excited to try back at home! This class is being offered through The Center for Continuing Education in partnership with the Town of Mamaroneck's Sustainability Collaborative. This class is free, but registration is required at LMCCE.org.
