This past Sunday, October 5, the Village held its 4th Annual Scarecrow Build. Our thanks to all the kids, parents, families, and friends for assembling these incredibly creative and imaginative scarecrows!
Completed scarecrows are going up in the Village's Downtown area, attached to light poles, complete with cornstalks and a hay bale --- all to enhance the festive display!

Report Storm Property Damage
In coordination with the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Westchester County is coordinating an Initial Damage Assessment to collect data related to storm-related loss. In addition to collecting information about damages to public infrastructure, New York State is also collecting data directly from residents and businesses regarding personal losses.
This State survey tool is meant to help in collecting information and data on damages in support of a potential request for federal assistance, not to duplicate any ongoing relief efforts. Information collected via the survey will be shared with each municipality identified through the reporting process, with Westchester County and the State of New York.

About this survey:
In collaboration with affected counties, New York State has developed this online form allowing residents to self-report damages to their homes and/or businesses from the most recent rainfall flooding event. The purpose of this form is solely to collect information that may help State and local officials identify damages and to develop requests by the State for federal disaster recovery assistance programs. This form is NOT an application for disaster relief programs.
Please note:
- Do not use this form to report immediate, life-threatening needs. Call 911.
- Reporting damage is a voluntary activity and is not a substitute for reporting damage to your insurance agency.
- Completing this form does not guarantee disaster relief assistance.
- Please submit one survey per affected housing unit or business.
- This form is for damages that occurred in New York State only.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to Provide Update at October 23rd Board of Trustees Work Session
Save-the-Date: On Monday, October 23, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will provide an update on the Mamaroneck & Sheldrake Rivers Flood Risk Management Project at the Village's Board of Trustees Work Session at 5:15pm. Please Note: Members of the public can view the USACE presentation in-person at the Village’s Courtroom at 169 Mt. Pleasant Avenue, or via LMC Media. Additionally, Work Sessions are intended for the Board of Trustees to gather information and ruminate about issues as a group. Due to the format and the limited time of the Work Session, only the Mayor and Trustees will ask questions to the representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. While open to the public, questions and comments from the public is not permitted during Board of Trustee Work Sessions.
Village of Mamaroneck Police Department To Receive NYS DCJS Accreditation
Following three days of in-person visits between September 26th and September 28th, as well as a rigorous 18-month process that included an exhaustive internal and external examination of policies and procedures, the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department (VMPD) is being recommended to receive accreditation this December by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS), VMPD Chief Sandra DiRuzza recently announced. Village of Mamaroneck Gas to Electric BuyBack Program
The Village of Mamaorneck is offering to residents a program to buyback combustion engine lawn equipment. This program will assist in transitioning away from gas-powered equipment by providing a $100 voucher. Funding for this program is provided by New York State's Clean Energy Communities program.
Trade-in your gas-powered equipment in return for a $100 voucher – redeemable at KRB Inc. (460 Ogden Ave. in Mamaroneck) or Foley's Hardware (2088 Boston Post Rd. in Larchmont), toward the purchase of electric powered lawn equipment only. A limited number of vouchers are available on a first come, first served basis.

Jefferson Avenue Park Basketball Court Closed Starting Today 10/13
The Jefferson Avenue Park Basketball Court (at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and North Barry Avenue) will be closed starting Friday, October 13th through early next week so that the basketball court can be painted. We are sorry for this inconvenience. The rest of the park (including the new playground equipment) will remain open. Thank you.
Operation of Leaf Blowers is Now Permitted (Until May 14, 2024)
Beginning on October 1st, Leaf Blowers are allowed in the Village of Mamaroneck. The operation of leaf blowers, as per the Village of Mamaroneck's Leaf Blower Law, is permitted from October 1st to May 14, 2024.
Please remember that leaves, clippings, brush, and other small branches should be contained in a biodegradable brown paper bag or open garbage can (with drain holes at the bottom) and placed at the curb. PLEASE DO NOT PILE LEAVES OR GRASS AT THE CURB OR ON MEDIANS OR ISLANDS ON YOUR STREET. The Village's Department of Public Works (DPW) Leaf Pickup Schedule for 2023 can be found here. Please keep in mind that although DPW makes every attempt to adhere to this schedule, collection may be a day or two ahead or behind of schedule depending on the weather.

Our friends and colleagues at the Town of Mamaroneck will host a Repair Cafe on Sunday, October 15, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the Mamaroneck Senior Center at 1288 Boston Post Road. Have an item needing repair? Don't toss it and add to the waste stream. Let's fix it together! Spooktacular - Sunday, October 22
Grab your trick or treat bag, dress up as your favorite character and join us for our Annual Spooktacular Halloween parade and festivities taking place on Sunday, October 22, 2023. Goblins and ghouls, witches and ghosts meet in front of Smashburger at 448 Mamaroneck Avenue for check-in/arrival at 11:00 am. The parade starts at 11:30am and marches down Mamaroneck Avenue to spooky Harbor Island Park, where holiday fun, candy and activities are planned for your little monster starting at 12:15pm. Festivities taking place include a bubble show performance, pumpkin decorating, face painting, a balloon artist and a best costume contest. Let the spooky season begin!

Turkey Trot - Sunday, November 19
The Village of Mamaroneck Parks and Recreation Department welcomes runners and spectators for the 57th annual Turkey Trot and Gobbler Race! The event will be held on Sunday, November 19th at Harbor Island Park. Race day registration opens at 8:00am. The 1-mile Gobbler Race will begin at 9:45am and the 5K Turkey Trot will begin after completion of Gobbler Race. All registrants will receive a free t-shirt and medal. Spotted Lanternfly
Multiple reports from Mamaroneck and all over Westchester of the Spotted Lanternfly have been submitted to the State's Department of Agriculture and Markets
Lycorma delicatula, or Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), is an invasive plant hopper from Asia. In the United States, it was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014. Spotted Lanternfly has been found in New York State. SLF threatens the agriculture and forestry industries, and is also a nuisance pest. The nymphs and adults feed on over 70 different plants with piercing sucking mouthparts.

- You can help the Department of Agriculture and Markets by reporting SLF immediately after it is found. Follow these steps:
- Take a photo
- Collect a sample and place it in a freezer or in a jar with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer
- Contact the SLF responders
After you have reported SLF in your area and collected a sample, you should kill any additional SLF you see by stepping on it or crushing it.
2023 Mosquito Season
The Village of Mamaroneck is actively monitoring for mosquito activity as part of our Village’s mosquito control program. Since 2019, the Village has been using Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis (Bti), a naturally occurring bacterium found in soils, in order to treat the Village’s catch basins and the marshes in the Shore Acres neighborhood*. Bti is an effective tool that reduces the mosquito population while minimizing the amount of pesticide materials being sprayed or “fogged” into the air. Click here to read more.

Village of Mamaroneck Tree Law
Trees help sustain an ecological system that provides climatic advantages to people and wildlife alike: cooling the air, buffering the wind and providing a natural barrier to noise. Conserving these natural assets was the impetus behind a decision by the Village of Mamaroneck's Board of Trustees (with support from the Tree Committee) to vote on and enact a new tree law. On October 12, 2021, the Village passed a local law making property owners in the village responsible for the maintenance of trees on their property, including their removal. The penalty for failing to follow this new law is a fine or $1,050 or more. The law is intended to preserve our trees, which provide numerous benefits, including the reduction of air pollution, increase to the tree canopy, and the improvement of the drainage and maintenance of a healthy eco-system. Studies show that a minimum tree canopy cover of 40% is the threshold needed to reap the full benefits of trees. A goal of the Board of Trustees, supported by the Tree Committee, is to achieve this minimum tree canopy coverage and maintain it on an ongoing basis. The Tree Committee as well as the Building Department has put together the following resources to help educate and inform residents about our Village's Tree Law.

As of September 2, Westchester County’s “Upon Request” Law Aimed at Curbing Use of Single-Use Foodware Is Now In Effect
In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, Westchester County is reminding residents and business owners of its "Upon Request" single-use foodware law, which took effect on September 2. This legislation aims to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics by promoting a more mindful approach to their usage within food service establishments by limiting the use of single-use foodware products to only when specifically requested by the customer. Empty Slips at the Marina Available for Rent
Empty slips at the marina for boats of varying sizes are now available for rent. The Village of Mamaroneck Harbor Master oversees and administers all vessels located within the waterways of Harbor Island, assigns each applicant a slip space, and is responsible for maintaining records of dock and mooring assignments. If you are interested in reserving a slip, please contact Jeff LaRusso or Kristen Salov at the Harbor Master’s Office at (914) 777-7744.

Partner-in-the-Community: Free Community Class: Reduce Food Waste with Delicious Recipes from Renowned Local Chef Adam Kaye
NEW DATE: Wednesday, October 18, 7pm-8pm, Town of Mamaroneck's Senior Center
Join Adam Kaye, chef and co-founder of The Spare Food Co., and former Culinary Director at Blue Hill Restaurant, for a cooking demonstration that strives to solve the nagging question of what to do with those odds and ends in your fridge. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways that we can draw down carbon in the atmosphere and reverse the effects of climate change. Adam will demonstrate creative ways that we can all minimize waste while maximizing flavor in our kitchens. This class will provide you with an overview of the global issue of waste in our food system, and you’ll leave with simple recipes you’ll be excited to try back at home! This class is being offered through The Center for Continuing Education in partnership with the Town of Mamaroneck's Sustainability Collaborative. This class is free, but registration is required at LMCCE.org.
