The New York Total Solar Eclipse - Monday, April 8

New York Total Solar Eclipse 2024-04-08 SMALL JPG

The first total eclipse over New York in 99 years will be visible on April 8, 2024. The eclipse will begin in western New York shortly after 2 p.m. Full totality will begin in Chautauqua County at 3:17 p.m., moving through the state to Plattsburgh at 3:25 p.m. Locations in the path of totality could experience total darkness for up to 4 minutes (see map). For the areas of the state that are outside the path, there will still be quite a celestial spectacle! The minimum coverage in the state will be on Long Island, with the sun being shadowed at 88 percent there. New York City will see 89 percent coverage with 96 percent in the Capital Region. Although Mamaroneck is not in the path of totality for this total eclipse, we will experience roughly 90% eclipse coverage!

  • Westchester NY Eclipse Viewing Time: Begins: 3:16 p.m.
  • Maximum Eclipse: 3:26 p.m. (estimated 90% coverage)
  • End: 3:30p.m.

What is a total solar eclipse? - On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will come to North America. This cosmic event will be visible from within a narrow route, called the path of totality, which will extend through Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. People viewing the eclipse from locations where the moon's shadow completely covers the Sun, known as the path of totality, will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will become dark, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun.

    Village of Mamaroneck Tree Law

Tree Law Graphic 01 SMALL PNG

Trees help sustain an ecological system that provides climatic advantages to people and wildlife alike: cooling the air, buffering the wind and providing a natural barrier to noise. Conserving these natural assets was the impetus behind a decision by the Village of Mamaroneck's Board of Trustees (with support from the Tree Committee) to vote on and enact a new tree law. On October 12, 2021, the Village passed a local law making property owners in the village responsible for the maintenance of trees on their property, including their removal. The penalty for failing to follow this new law is a fine or $1,050 or more. The law is intended to preserve our trees, which provide numerous benefits, including the reduction of air pollution, increase to the tree canopy, and the improvement of the drainage and maintenance of a healthy eco-system. Studies show that a minimum tree canopy cover of 40% is the threshold needed to reap the full benefits of trees. A goal of the Board of Trustees, supported by the Tree Committee, is to achieve this minimum tree canopy coverage and maintain it on an ongoing basis. The Tree Committee as well as the Building Department has put together the following resources to help educate and inform residents about our Village's Tree Law.

Partner-in-the-Community: MTA Metro-North New Haven Line Mamaroneck Substation Replacement

    Metro-North Train PNG

MTA Construction and Development on behalf of Metro-North Railroad is undertaking an important construction project in the vicinity of Rockland Avenue, Waverly Avenue, and Railroad Way along the Metro-North Railroad right of way. This project intends to keep Metro-North's infrastructure in a state of good repair, and to improve safety, resiliency, and reliability of trains operating on the New Haven Line. This project will replace the current obsolete outdoor substation in Mamaroneck with a new indoor enclosed substation next to the existing substation. This project will improve the power supply capacity and resiliency of the power supply of the New Haven Line. The overall project is expected to be completed by December 2026.

The Mamaroneck substation is located by catenary 128, adjacent to the commercial area near the Toyota City Service and Parts Center at 700 Waverly Ave. During the course of the entire project this work will cause loud noises due to construction work, including but not limited to movement of heavy equipment and machinery, large trucks, and train horns as they move through the community.

To facilitate this work, rubber track pads will be installed southwest of Rockland Avenue. The installation of these pads will take place between March 25th and April 15th. During this time, two or three nights of work will be required, with the exact dates determined by the MTA's ability to support the track outages needed to perform the work.

Please visit new.mta.info/project/new-haven-line-substation-replacement for more information. If you have any questions, you can reach out to the project hotline 24/7: (203) 702-8899.
